The production location in Changchun in China

FAW-Volkswagen is a joint venture between the Chinese partner FAW (First Automobile Works), Volkswagen AG and AUDI AG, and was established in 1991. The integration of AUDI AG as the third partner of FAW and VW was decided at the end of 1995.

Along with the joint venture with the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) in Shanghai, FAW-Volkswagen is the second location of the Volkswagen Group in China. Volkswagen produces vehicles, engines and transmissions in cooperation with its Chinese partner.

The foundation stone for a new plant next to the FAW-Volkswagen site was laid in July 2003 during a formal ceremony. The new plant was opened in December 2004 in the presence of Gerhard Schröder, who was German Chancellor at the time.

The Volkswagen models Jetta, Bora, Golf and Caddy are produced in China, along with the Audi A6 and Audi A4 models. FAW-Volkswagen sold around 276,000 vehicles to Chinese customers in 2005, of which the Audi A6 and the Audi A4 totalled approximately 45,000 and 11,000 respectively.

The new Audi A6 has been built in Changchun since the beginning of 2005. Like its predecessor, the chassis, engine and wheelbase have been especially modified to meet the requirements of the Chinese market – the wheelbase has been extended by 100 mm to provide greater spaciousness in the rear of the car.
