A mandatory safety belt use law for cars has been in force in Germany since 1976. It has contributed significantly to the reduction of injuries. The most common occupant protection system today is the three-point safety belt, which holds the occupant in his or her seat and prevents the body from being subjected to uncontrolled movements and forces. Supplementary systems are increasingly being offered, for example, pyrotechnic
safety belt pretensioner,
belt force limiter and, above all,
airbags.
