In 1954, the DKW RT 200 was launched as the model /2 with a redesigned, short-stroke engine and 4-speed gearbox. The modified bore/stroke ratio resulted in good resilience to overspeeding, and the new 4-speed gearbox was configured to exploit this characteristic. The 1956 model was given forked suspension with oil-damped suspension struts in place of the telescopic rear wheel suspension used until then. The "S" in the model designation referred to this rear wheel fork.
