The first attempt by the Audi brand to gain a foothold in the premium class segment. From February 1980, the Audi 200 was available alternatively with a naturally aspirated engine and 4+E gearbox, or with a turbocharged engine and sporty 5-speed gearbox. Both engine versions were also optionally available with a 3-speed automatic transmission.
The Audi 200 5T accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.7 seconds. The top speed was 202 km/h. With 170 hp, it was the most powerful European front-wheel drive vehicle at the time.
