The major facelift on the Audi 80 B2 in 1984 was the start of a split within the model series. From September the 5-cylinder engines were only offered in the new Audi 90.
As a new model, positioned between the Audi 80 and Audi 100, the Audi 90 enjoyed a niche existence between 1984 and 1986. There were two different 5-cylinder engines, the larger one optionally available with a catalytic converter, and a turbodiesel engine.
