The Audi Coupé, which was based on the technology of the Audi 80/90 B3 series, was presented in September 1988. The new model went into production in December 1988, initially only with 5-cylinder models. In the years that followed, the engine range was expanded by 4- and 6-cylinder engines plus a powerful 20-valve turbocharged unit.
The first series of the Audi S2 Coupé, which could be recognised by the polished wheel rim spiders, had an output of 220 hp and a 5-speed gearbox. From 1992 the engine output was increased to 230 hp. A 6-speed gearbox followed in the course of further development. 7,370 units of the two versions of the S2 Coupé were built.
