Artistic brilliance and utmost exclusivity give the Salzburg Easter Festival its unmistakable ambiance. Herbert von Karajan founded this jewel among festivals, which begins a new era in 2013: Christian Thielemann, Karajan’s former musical assistant and now the conductor most in demand in Germany, assumes the post of Artistic Director of the Salzburg Easter Festival. "His" new orchestra, the Staatskapelle Dresden, will form the orchestra in residence.
With Christian Thielemann as its Artistic Director, the Salzburg Easter Festival is not only sending a clear signal for a new beginning at the highest possible artistic level but also continuing its existing tradition with an artistically outstanding figure at the head of his orchestra of choice. The Staatskapelle Dresden can look back on a tradition which is second to none, equally distinguished in the opera house as in the concert hall.
The Salzburg Easter Festival will open in 2013 with a new production of Richard Wagner's opera "Parsifal", directed by Michael Schulz, with set and costumes designed by Alexander Polzin. Johan Botha will perform the title role, with Michaela Schuster, Wolfgang Koch and Stephen Milling interpreting the other main roles.
Audi has been the main sponsor of the festival since 2007.
