For more than a hundred years, the shape of the ‘concert grand’ has been determined by its complex internal mechanisms – until a team from the Audi Design Studio in Munich accepted the challenge of giving this instrument a modern body typical of Audi while retaining its perfect sound quality.
“We were naturally nervous when we tackled the task of redesigning such a sensitive musical instrument,” says Wolfgang Egger, Head of Audi Group Design. But the creative commitment was worth it: “It was a important experience for our young designers and will stand them in good stead when they work on production cars.”
In due course the craftsmen at the Bösendorfer piano workshops built the first Audi Design grand piano, and have now included it in their sales programme. The instrument can be heard at concerts held in the Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm Audi Forums.
