Good season, but ...

Mattias Ekström is not only the longest-standing Audi DTM driver of all time, but also the most successful one. The Swede, who has been successful in many other motorsport disciplines as well, is regarded as one of the world’s most versatile racing drivers. Now, he is also causing a sensation with his own rallycross team and the Audi S1 EKS RX quattro. He achieved a great triumph in 2016: With a round to spare, Ekström became the World Rallycross champion at the Estering. Whilst again doing double duty in the DTM and in the FIA World Rallycross Championship, Ekström emphasised his class by winning several World RX rounds and fighting for the 2017 DTM drivers’ title up until the final metres of the DTM season, narrowly missing his third DTM title and ultimately finishing as the runner-up. He spends as much of his free time as possible with his partner Heidi and his two children. His motto both on and off track: Go hard or go home.

“Obviously, the third title was our big aim. In the end, just a few, yet crucial, points were missing,” said Ekström. “Generally, it was a good season. I was particularly happy with my racing performance. But in qualifying, I wasn’t good enough.”
