Dutchman Robin Frijns on making his debut on the Macau city street circuit was the best Audi campaigner in the FIA GT World Cup. Three teams from Audi Sport customer racing – Audi Sport Team WRT, HCB-Rutronik Racing and Aust Motorsport – were on the grid with five R8 LMS cars.
Fortune
and skill

Roulette in the gamblers’ paradise: in the Asian casino metropolis of Macau the race in the narrow streets of the city circuit was once again a gamble. Audi Sport campaigner Robin Frijns experienced this as early as in qualifying on touching a track barrier, so achieving only grid position 17.

In round one, the qualification race, the Dutchman’s Audi R8 LMS escaped a rear-end collision nearly unharmed to which twelve other entrants had previously fallen victim, including his four brand colleagues in the Audi Sport customer racing teams. Frijns drove the fastest race lap, finishing fourth for Audi Sport Team WRT. Meanwhile, the teams’ mechanics were very busy preparing the cars for Nico Müller and Lucas di Grassi again for the race on Sunday.

Strong performance

After Audi had won the city street race in Macau four times since 2011 and travelled to the FIA GT World Cup as the title defender, the brand had to admit a very narrow defeat this year. Robin Frijns as the runner-up missed victory in Sunday’s race by only 0.618 seconds, so showing a brilliant performance on making his debut. As a result, a season in which the teams around the globe clinched an amazing 14 drivers’ championship titles ended on a positive note for Audi Sport customer racing.
