Mattias Ekström and his team EKS will compete in the 2017 season with three Audi S1 EKS RX quattro for the first time. Together with the Finn Toomas Heikkinen, driver world champion Mattias Ekström also won the teams’ title last year. This season, in newcomer Reinis Nitišs from Latvia, the team will be bolstered by another driver.
“Together with Audi Sport, we have worked hard to get three cars to race and I am delighted that it’s all worked out,” says Ekström. “In Reinis we have another strong driver. Though he is only 21, he has already gained a lot of experience in Rallycross.”
Ekström and Heikkinen will do everything they can to establish themselves as the best team again, as well as achieving top drivers’ rankings. Nitišs will also contest all twelve championship rounds in 2017, but will only be fighting for points in the drivers’ rankings in his 560 hp Audi S1 EKS RX quattro.
A total of 18 permanent starters will compete in the fourth World Championship season; alongside EKS are, among others, works teams like Peugeot and Ford as well as the newly formed Volkswagen team with Johan Kristoffersson and Petter Solberg, the 2014 and 2015 world champion.
