MATTIAS EKSTRÖM FLEXED HIS MUSCLES IN THE 2017 FIA WORLD RALLYCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON OPENER AT BARCELONA. ON THE CIRCUIT DE BARCELONA-CATALUNYA, LIKE LAST YEAR, THE REIGNING WORLD CHAMPION TRIUMPHED, NOW LEADING THE DIRVERS’ CLASSIFICATION AFTER ROUND ONE OF TWELVE.

Sun, rain ...

The start to the first race weekend this season proved an emotional roller coaster for Ekström and his teammates, Toomas Heikkinen and Reinis Nitišs. “The weather conditions kept changing – sun, rain, sun, rain,” says Ekström. At the end of day one, the Swede was only ranking in eleventh place of the overall classification. Heikkinen had better luck. The Finn did the best job of coping with the changeable conditions and was leading after day one.

On Sunday, the prerequisites changed. Bright sunshine and a dry track played into Ekström’s hands. Now the 38-year-old was able to fully use the strengths of his 560-HP Audi S1 EKS RX quattro and went on to climb to position two. For the semi-finals of the twelve best drivers, Heikkinen and Nitišs qualified as well. However, both youngsters were eliminated in the penultimate round, while Ekström dominated the action, clinching a lights-to-flag victory in the semi-final and a lights-to-flag victory in the final!

Portugal calling

EKS will be travelling from Barcelona some 1,000 kilometres to Montalegre, Portugal, where World RX round two will be held in three weeks’ time. Ekström still has a score to settle with the shortest track on the calendar. In 2016, following a collision in the semi-final, he had to bury his hopes for victory.
