Mattias Ekström is World Championship runner-up. In the FIA World Rallycross Championship season finale in Cape Town, the Swede claimed third place and in doing so snatched second place in the overall standings from Petter Solberg. EKS was third in the teams’ classification.
Successful Premiere

South Africa hosted the World Rallycross Championship for the first time ever this year. The unanimous opinion: test passed with flying colours. Packed grandstands, fantastic atmosphere and thrilling races to the end. The final event of the season was the best advertisement for rallycross racing. And also dethroned World Champion Mattias Ekström couldn’t suppress a smile: “That really was a cool weekend. Obviously we always want to win, but unfortunately we weren’t fast enough.”

Before everybody starts a well-earned winter break, it’s time to fittingly celebrate the season’s successes, even if perfectionist Ekström is not entirely satisfied. “Second place in the overall standings is good, but at the end of the day also the first loser. Even so I’ll celebrate this success with the team. The guys have done a fantastic job throughout the entire year.”

Many Positives

A successful season concluded for Audi and EKS. Ekström won four races and was third once. Team mate Toomas Heikkinen took another podium position after finishing second at the Estering. On eleven of the twelve race weekends at least one driver made the final in an Audi S1 EKS RX quattro.
