The moon is our nearest neighbour in the solar system. Throughout human history it has played an important role for life on Earth – as a point of orientation for explorers and seafarers, as ruler of the tides and as a magical attraction. Even though humans first set foot on the moon more than 45 years ago, it still seems to be far away and out of reach to us. But soon this will forever be a thing of the past.

Pioneering spirit forever

That will be thanks to the Berlin start-up Part-Time Scientists, which has set an ambitious goal to be the first private company to explore the “eighth continent”. What up to now has only been achieved by government space agencies, with hosts of employees and budgets worth billions, will in the future be accomplished by small, dynamic high-tech firms: missions to the moon. If this succeeds, it will be biggest revolution in space travel since the Apollo missions of the United States – and Robert Böhme and his team will write human and technological history. Audi long ago recognised the visionary and innovative power of the Part-Time Scientists Mission. That is why the automotive manufacturers from Ingolstadt began supporting the team around Robert Böhme, founder and CEO of Part-Time Scientists, in 2015. The focus of the collaboration is primarily on joint development of the Audi lunar quattro moon rover.

Audi lunar quattro

The Audi lunar quattro is a technical masterpiece of moon exploration, jam-packed with the latest Audi technologies: high-strength Audi lightweight construction, paired with intelligent quattro drive technology and an efficient e-tron motor powered by an Audi solar panel, provide the rover with everything it needs. The design of the rover has been perfected by the Audi Design Team for use on the moon; the majority of rover components have been produced by Audi using a 3D printing method. Meaning: technology transfer of automotive engineering of the highest order. But the Audi lunar quattro will also need all that for its mission. Because of its extreme climatic conditions, the moon is considered the toughest test lab in the universe.
