The month of October witnessed more titles and many race wins for the Audi Sport customer racing teams fielding the Audi R8 LMS and Audi RS 3 LMS, and also the first class win for the Audi R8 LMS GT4. 

Audi Sport celebrated a one-two win at the first U.S. event of the Intercontinental GT Challenge. At the California 8 Hours, Pierre Kaffer, Kelvin van der Linde and Markus Winkelhock in the Audi R8 LMS from Audi Sport Team Magnus crossed the finish line with a 2.488-second advantage in front of the sister car from Audi Sport Team Land, which was driven by Connor De Phillippi, Christopher Haase and Christopher Mies. Audi left California as the leader of the Intercontinental GT Challenge manufacturers’ standings and three Audi drivers currently occupy the top three positions in the drivers’ classification: Markus Winkelhock leads ahead of Christopher Haase and Christopher Mies.

One team

One day, three successes: Montaplast by Land-Motorsport enjoyed a tremendous Saturday during the second weekend of October. In North America, the team from Niederdreisbach won the GTD class of the Petit Le Mans endurance race, the finale of the 2017 WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. The Audi R8 LMS was driven by Connor De Phillippi, Christopher Mies and Sheldon van der Linde. On the other side of the Atlantic in Germany, the team won the eighth round of the VLN Endurance Championship at the Nürburgirng with the driver pairing of Dries Vantoor and Markus Winkelhock. At the Hockenheimring, Land-Motorpsort tasted victory with Ronny C’Rock winning one of the DMV GTC races during the season finale. 

The finale of the DMV GTC also included Fabian Plentz and Egon Allgäuer winning the overall drivers’ title with an Audi R8 LMS ultra from HCB-Rutronik Racing. Aust Motorsport won the Dunlop 60 race with the duo of Carrie Schreiner and Markus Pommer, whilst Tommy Tulpe and Fabian Plentz from HCB-Rutronik Racing successfully defended the Dunlop 60 drivers’ title with their runner-up result in the year’s final race. 

The 2017 Audi R8 LMS Cup finale at Zhejiang in China saw David Chen becoming the first amateur driver to win a race overall in the Asian Audi one-make cup. Jake Dennis won the second race on his debut in the series. The drivers’ titles of the Am+ Cup and Am Cup were won by David Chen and Bhurit Bhirombhakdi respectively, whilst Alessio Picariello had already won the overall drivers’ title at the previous round in Shanghai during September.

OD Racing won both races during the Blancpain GT Series Asia finale at Zhejiang. The duo of Aditya Patel and Mitchell Gilbert piloted the teams’ Audi R8 LMS to victory and secured the runner-up position in the overall drivers’ standings, missing the title by a single point. Marchy Lee and Shaun Thong from Audi Hong Kong won the series’ Silver Cup classification.

Xu Jia from Kings Racing won the GT3 drivers’ title of the China GT Championship. Jake Dennis partnered with Xu Jia to take a win and a third place at the penultimate round at the Chengdu circuit. One week later, the finale at Zhejiang saw Xu Jia, driving together with Dries Vanthoor, clinching another victory and a third place during the weekend. With these results, Xu Jia was crowned as the GT3 class’ champion. Their teammates Wang Liang and Martin Rump won the weekend’s second race, which crowned Kings Racing as the winners of the teams’ classification as well. 

The proven Audi R8 LMS ultra clinched wins in Italy, Australia and Germany: Audi Sport Italia closed the 2017 Italian GT Championship season by taking a class victory at Mugello with drivers Luca Magnoni and Luca Rangoni. Matthew Stoupas clinched the drivers’ title of the Sports Cars class within the Victorian State Circuit Racing Championships in Australia. Stoupas won all three of the races during the season finale at Phillip Island. The Spezial Tourenwagen Trophy finale at the Nürburgring saw Andreas Schmidt (R8 LMS ultra) taking class victory in the first race and then Car Collection Motorsport repeated this feat in the second race with drivers Dimitri Parhofer and Peter Schmidt in a current-generation R8 LMS.

The month of October also marked the opening of the Audi R8 LMS GT4 sales. The GT4 sports car delivering up to 364 kW (495 hp) can now be ordered. The company offers the race car at a price of 198,000 euros (excluding VAT). Deliveries are planned to begin in December. 

One week after officially going on sale, the Audi R8 LMS GT4 clinched its first victory. Although the production-based race car has not yet been homologated for the GT4 category, Rahel Frey and Christopher Haase won the SP-X class at the eighth round of the VLN Endurance Championship at the Nürburgring. 

Paul Holton was crowned as the drivers’ champion of the Pirelli World Challenge TC class with two pole positions and two race wins at the Laguna Seca season finale. He was behind the wheel of the C360R team’s Audi RS 3 LMS. C360R also won the class’ teams’ title. 

The New Faster Team was successful in the TCR China Series rounds during October. The third race weekend at Zhejiang, which ran together with the TCR Asia Series, saw the team taking three wins in the TCR China classification. This feat of three race wins was repeated at Ningbo three weeks later. Andy Yan won five of these six races and teammate Huang Chu Han was victorious once. 

Target Competition gave the Audi RS 3 LMS its first win in the TCR Italy Series with Giacomo Altoè at Monza. Plamen Kralev won a race at the FIA European Touring Car Cup finale in the Audi RS 3 LMS from Kraf Racing at the Most circuit in the Czech Republic. Sporting Clube de Braga/Veloso Motorsport won a race with Rafael Lobato at the joint TCR Portugal and TCR Spain-Ibérico season finale at Portimão. In the final TCR Ibérico classification, Rafael Lobato and teammate Patrick Cunha took second place in the debut season of the Audi RS 3 LMS. The endurance race during the TCR Benelux Championship finale at Assen was won by the duo of Paul Sieljes and Willem Meijer in an Audi RS 3 LMS from Bas Koeten Racing. Kevin Arnold celebrated three class wins during the DMV GTC finale, winning Class 4 in both of the DMV GTC sprint races and in the Dunlop 60 race. Dmitry Bragin and Irek Minnakhmetov, with an Audi RS 3 LMS from Taif Motorsport, took class victory in the 2017 Akhmat Race at the Fort Grozny circuit in Chechnya.

Test day in Neuburg an der Donau: Current and prospective customers got to know the entire model range of the customer sport program in Neuburg, Audi Sport customer racing’s headquarters. From October 19 to 21, numerous guests used the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the Audi R8 LMS GT3, the R8 LMS GT4 and the RS 3 LMS. The test days provided information and background on fielding options and the brand’s service offering up to and including driving opportunities on the handling course.
