The Culture Drive – in tune with the city

It all begins with a first step: FC Bayern Munich have switched their car fleet to electric vehicles. Together with Audi, FC Bayern is demonstrating its commitment to a more sustainable future in the city with the aim of inspiring and positively influencing Munich’s citizens.

The stars of FC Bayern are triple winners, national players, champions – but also citizens of Munich. As part of a globalised world, the city of Munich thrives on the fact that its citizens are ready to accept new risks every day and show the courage to embrace change. Through good ideas and deeds today, future generations will inherit a world shaped by progressive thinking that is worth living in. Without such progressive-thinking people who have a forward-looking mentality, Munich would not be what it is.

As part of the Audi + FC Bayern ‘Culture Drive’, the club’s players visited five of these people to gain an insight into their creativity. They confirmed one thing to us above all: the future is not something that can be thought through today, rather it is a state of mind which helps them develop new, good ideas every day. The future is an attitude.

Bellevue di Monaco – bringing people together

Join Benjamin Pavard, Alphonso Davies and Joshua Kimmich on a visit to Bellevue di Monaco. This residential and cultural centre enables refugees and asylum seekers to become part of Munich’s community and turns supposed foreigners into fellow citizens. The social cooperative was started by Till Hofmann and Grisi Ganzer to strengthen Munich’s cohesion and, in so doing, to give the city a cosmopolitan sophistication through diversity.

Ganzer and Hofmann’s offer to the city is nothing less than to make a positive contribution to social change: temporary accommodation for refugees, language courses, lessons on understanding the local culture, and sports programmes to galvanise the intercultural exchange between Munich’s citizens and would-be citizens.

The city will benefit from this in the long run because self-reliant and self-confident people can do one thing in particular: help others and contribute towards the welfare of society. Munich’s highest sports ground, on the roof of Bellevue di Monaco, is a visual highlight for those who like to kick a ball and convinced Grisi, Till, FC Bayern and Audi of the inclusive power of sport.

If you want to give your city something for the long-term, you have to be willing to fight for it. A house is there for the people who live and work in it. A property is also there to make money. The simple question is: what makes a city? Probably the people. And that is why we need facilities like Bellevue di Monaco which bring together people from very different cultures and introduce them to Munich city life through the unifying power of sport.

Container Collective – the creative team

FC Bayern’s team of creative forwards, represented by Serge Gnabry, Thomas Müller and Leroy Sané, visits Munich’s Container Collective to gain an overview of how other young, creative people in Munich get the space they need to develop their creative talents in the long-term. The project, developed by Robinson and Neville Kuhlmann, thrives on having the courage to embrace the alternative idea and shows, in a small space, how thrilling and productive continuous change can be.

Munich’s Werksviertel Mitte was established on the former site of the Pfanni potato factory. The creative heart of the site is, in turn, the Container Collective, the brainchild of two well-known Munich brothers, Robinson and Neville Kuhlmann. Initially, the aim was simply to fill the free space on the site temporarily with an innovative concept. Twenty-seven discarded and expanded shipping containers later, you suddenly have a ‘business space’ in which cafes, bars, workshops, a tattoo parlour, studios, writing rooms, a graphic design studio, exhibition space and a radio station rub shoulders and a collective of motivated individualists can both pursue their own projects and work together collaboratively.

Here ideas are born which can become anything because they don’t have to be something. The rents are low and the pressure to surrender to the commercial present and to forget about ‘tomorrow’ is correspondingly small. This is good for Munich and, combined with coffee, cake and delicious drinks, is a great experience for all city dwellers.

Pinakothek der Moderne – a hall of fame

We accompany FC Bayern players Leon Goretzka, Corentin Tolisso and Lucas Hernández on a visit to the Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich’s museum of modern art. Here they witness the influence of design on world history and gain an insight from Audi designer, Jason Battersby, into how design has changed the world over the course of the last 60 years.

It all starts with a vision – how, with the help of new technology and a groundbreaking idea, you can shape industrial design in such a way that it can have a positive and lasting influence on the world. Then it is up to us whether we accept this design because it beautifies, facilitates and improves our everyday lives. Munich’s Pinakothek der Moderne exhibits those designs which have become art in the past due to their combination of innovation and aesthetics, precisely because, as singular innovations, they ushered in and shaped a new era.

Jason Battersby works on the Audi e-tron programme. And, naturally, it is his aspiration and that of his colleagues that the design of the e-tron today will give people the desire and the courage to integrate e-mobility into their lives. Ultimately, it must be the secret wish of every Audi designer that their work will be exhibited in the Pinakothek der Moderne as the start of a new era and that, in their turn, they will inspire designers around the world to create progressive and sustainable design innovations.

The present we know was once the future we believed in. By providing a glimpse into the past, the Pinakothek shows us how innovation and new technologies have significantly influenced world design, and how the modern era derived its dynamic cultural drive from the desire for change in design.
