Audi Sport customer racing celebrated its fifth victory in an emotional 47th running of the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring.

Frédéric Vervisch, Pierre Kaffer, Dries Vanthoor, Frank Stippler and Chris Reinke

After 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2017, the Audi R8 LMS again won the world’s biggest car race. The more than 25 kilometre long Nürburgring with its notorious Nordschleife took its toll once more: plenty of accidents, damage and retirements shaped the action-packed race. By contrast, the new evolution of the Audi R8 LMS was running perfectly, just like the two other products of Audi Sport customer racing’s offering – the Audi RS 3 LMS and the Audi R8 LMS GT4. Audi Sport Team Phoenix won the race after a thrilling battle with last year’s winners, Porsche. Frank Stippler had been part of the winning team as early as in 2012, whereas Pierre Kaffer and the two Belgians, Dries Vanthoor and Frédéric Vervisch, decided the iconic race in the Eifel in their favour for the first time. Their performances, just like the work of the team, remained impeccable, whereas last year’s winners were handed a penalty. With Audi Sport Team Car Collection in fourth and Team Phoenix Racing in eighth position, two other Audi R8 LMS finished in the top ten.

However, there was reason to celebrate not only in the overall classification. The SP8 class saw a one-two result: Team Giti Tire Motorsport by RaceIng with Rahel Frey/Bernhard Henzel/Pavel Lefterov/Frank Schmickler won in an Audi R8 LMS. Second place went to the Audi R8 LMS GT4 from the Giti Tire Motorsport by WS Racing team. The Asian driver crew of Xiaole He/Fei Li/Yat Wong/Andy Yan was taking turns at the wheel. Team Bonk Motorsport finished runners-up in the SP 3T class in an Audi RS 3 LMS. As a result, the touring car was the best TCR racing car in this class. The squad based in Münster had previously clinched two podium finishes in this race with this model in 2017 and another podium in 2018. In total, nine of the ten racing cars from Audi Sport customer racing crossed the finishing line.
