NEW R8 LMS WINS IN DUBAI

The Audi Sport customers kicked off 2019 with a strong haul of trophies – highlighted by the first endurance racing victory for the new evolution of the Audi R8 LMS at the Dubai 24 Hours.

The Audi R8 LMS began the new year by continuing its strong form in endurance racing with success at Dubai, Daytona and Zhuhai. The Dubai 24 Hours witnessed Audi Sport customers celebrating a one-two triumph with the new evolution of the Audi R8 LMS – the first endurance racing victory for the latest version of the GT3 race car from the brand with the four rings. Car Collection Motorsport, with the driver quartet of Dimitri Parhofer, Christopher Haase, Frédéric Vervisch and Rik Breukers, emerged victorious after 24 hours of competition, finishing one lap ahead of the Team MS7 by WRT squad.

In Florida, Daytona played host to the traditional 24-hour season opener of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, where WRT Speedstar Audi Sport scored a podium result in the GTD class. The Belgian and Canadian team finished third at the end of a race that was plagued by rain. Following the second red flag, the race director decided against resuming the race due to the bad weather conditions.

For the second time in succession, the Audi R8 LMS took the overall honours in the Circuit Hero 700-km endurance race at Zhuhai. Following Phoenix Racing Asia’s triumph last year, the Zun Motorsport Crew won the event during the very first race weekend of 2019.

More success in Asia came in the form of two titles in the GT Masters Asia at the 2018–2019 season finale hosted at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia. The Tianshi Racing Team (TSRT) conquered the overall GT3 class by taking the teams’ title and the drivers’ title with the duo of David Chen and Billy Lo. The TSRT squad also celebrated a GT class podium when the Asian Le Mans Series held a four-hour race in Thailand.

The W Racing Team (WRT) won both of the Gulf Sportscar Championship races at the Dubai Autodrome with youngster Charles Weerts. In doing so, the WRT squad are the favourites to secure the overall teams’ title at the season finale in Abu Dhabi next month.

TCR

After being awarded as the “TCR Model of the Year 2018” earlier in January, the Audi RS 3 LMS opened its account in 2019 with trophies in the USA and China. At Daytona, the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge season opener saw Fast MD Racing clinching third place in the TCR class on the team’s debut with the RS 3 LMS in the series. Adding to the overall victory in the Circuit Hero 700-km endurance race at Zhuhai was the Team TRC squad that finished runner-up in its class with an RS 3 LMS.
