A double podium in the Dubai 24 Hours rang in the New Year for the Audi R8 LMS. The rain-shortened race saw last year’s race winners, Car Collection Motorsport, finishing second overall with Audi Sport drivers Christopher Haase and Markus Winkelhock, together with Rik Breukers, Mike David Ortmann and Dimitri Parhofer. Third place on the podium went to the MS7 by WRT team, which relied on Audi Sport drivers Christopher Mies, Dries Vanthoor, alongside Rik Breukers, Mohammed Saud Fahad Al Saud and Michael Vergers.
Another podium result followed two weeks later in Florida, where the WRT Speedstar Audi Sport team finished third in the GTD class of the Daytona 24 Hours. The Belgian and Canadian team’s Audi R8 LMS was driven by Audi Sport drivers Mirko Bortolotti and Dries Vanthoor, who shared the GT3 sports car with Rolf Ineichen and Daniel Morad.
After winning the TCR class of the Dubai 24 Hours in 2017, the Audi RS 3 LMS repeated this success. AC Motorsport from Belgium won its class with the driver line-up of Tom Boonen, Gilles Magnus, Stéphane Perrin, Vincent Radermecker and Matthew Taskinen, who took victory with a two-lap advantage when the red flag was waved due to the weather.
At Daytona, Audi, as the defending manufacturers’ champions with the Audi RS 3 LMS, prevailed with a podium sweep in the TCR class of the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge season opener. Gavin Ernstone and Jon Morley from Road Shagger Racing lead the 1-2-3 triumph after four hours of racing, finishing ahead of Speed Syndicate Motorsport and JDC-Miller MotorSports.
The Audi R8 LMS GT2 enjoyed its first class victory in California. Following the new GT2 sports car’s debut at Barcelona in 2019, Rearden Racing gave the car its North American debut at The Thermal Club, where Dimitri Novikov piloted the entry to victory in the second race.
Two podium finishes highlighted January for the Audi R8 LMS GT4. In the SRO Winter Invitational Series at The Thermal Club, Mark Crigler from GMG Racing finished runner-up in the GT4 class of the first race, followed by teammate Elias Sabo scoring third place in the second race.
