The tally for Audi Sport customer racing in the 2018 season began with victories in Dubai and China.
Phoenix Racing celebrated a one-two triumph in the GT4 class of the Dubai 24 Hours. The German team’s success in the season opener of the 24H Series was led by a young team of drivers in the class-winning entry, which included former Audi Sport TT Cup champions Philip Ellis (2017) and Joonas Lappalainen (2016), alongside John-Louis Jasper and Gosia Rdest. The runner-up position was secured by the sister car driven by Adderly Fong, Charles Kwan, Marchy Lee, Darryl O’Young and Shaun Thong from Hong Kong.
One week after the success in Dubai, Phoenix Racing Asia clinched overall victory in the Circuit Hero 600-km endurance race at the Zhuhai International Circuit, leading a one-two victory for the brand with the four rings. The race-winning Audi R8 LMS was driven by the quartet of Shaun Thong, Marchy Lee, Alex Yoong and Xie Jiaxing, who finished ahead of the R8 LMS of Liu Peng, Che Liang and Jiao Peng from the Tianshi Racing Team.
Young Italian Giacomo Altoè took pole position and victory in the season opener of the TCR Middle East Series at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. Altoè, behind the wheel of an Audi RS 3 LMS from PitLane Competizioni, also clinched a third place in Abu Dhabi and then one week later, he secured a runner-up result in Dubai, the second race weekend of the 2018 season.
The month of January also saw the Asia-Pacific track debut of the Audi R8 LMS GT4, when the new race car was seen on track during the Audi Sport R8 LMS Cup pre-season customer test days at the Sepang Circuit in Malaysia. The newest model from Audi Sport customer racing will feature in the GT4 class of the 2018 Audi Sport R8 LMS Cup.
