PODIUM IN LAST RACE
In the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup finale in Malaysia, all four of the drivers from Audi Sport customer racing experienced a roller coaster ride in the qualifying sessions and the races. Fightbacks in all three races showed what was possible, but unfavourable grid positions and racing misfortune shaped Audi’s weekend. In the end, third position claimed by Frédéric Vervisch from Comtoyou Team Audi Sport in the last race was the best result for the Audi RS 3 LMS at Sepang.
After two years, Audi Sport customer racing’s official program in the FIA WTCR has ended. Audi’s drivers and teams jointly clinched 26 podium finishes, including seven victories, during this period. The Audi RS 3 LMS will continue to be present in motorsport worldwide going forward. Audi Sport has produced 180 of these race touring cars, which are successful in the customer’s hand in North and South America, across Europe, in Asia, Australia and New Zealand, having claimed 78 victories and a total of 227 podium finishes in 2019.
Elsewhere in Asia during December, the China Endurance Championship season finale in Wuhan saw an Audi RS 3 LMS podium lockout in the TCER class with the NewFaster team occupying the top three positons. With five class wins this season, NewFaster celebrated the class teams’ title and the class drivers’ title with Wang Hao. In the same series, Xie Peihan and Su Yanming won the GTC drivers’ title in an Audi R8 LMS.
The Team Liqui Moly NewFaster team won its class in the Circuit Hero 700km Endurance Race at Zhuhai, finishing third overall. The Audi RS 3 LMS was driven by the duo of Philip Tang and Tse Ka Hing. Third place in class was clinched by another Audi RS 3 LMS fielded by the Tianshi Racing Team.
In Brazil, the season finale of the Endurance Brasil series closed off 2019 four days before Christmas. In a six-hour endurance race at Curitiba, IMPA Motors Racing won its class with drivers Júnior Victorette, Marcelo Karam, Tuca Antoniazzi and Marcelo Santanna in an Audi RS 3 LMS.
Attempto Racing won the 2019 Gulf 12 Hours by finishing 1-2 with its two Audi R8 LMS cars at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi. Audi Sport drivers Christopher Mies and Dries Vanthoor won the race together with Rinat Salikhov. The trio finished ahead of their teammates, Audi Sport driver Mattia Drudi alongside Nick Foster and Murod Sultanov. The triumph marked the first victory for the Audi R8 LMS in this end-of-season endurance race, which also saw a new race distance record being set in 2019 with a total of 316 laps completed and 1,755 kilometres driven by the victorious Audi R8 LMS.
Also in the United Arab Emirates, the third race weekend of the UAE Procar Championship at the Dubai Autodrome saw Mohammed Saud Fahad al Saud winning both of the races in an Audi R8 LMS from the MS7 by WRT team. A perfect warm up for the team’s participation in the Dubai 24 Hours in January 2020.
In China, the Zun Motorsport Crew won its second consecutive overall victory in the Circuit Hero 700km Endurance Race at Zhuhai. Starting from pole position, Adderly Fong, Ma Ka Chun, Lin Yiming and Julio Acosta piloted their Audi R8 LMS to 162 laps, winning with an eleven-lap advantage after almost five hours of racing.
The newest member of the Audi Sport customer racing family, the Audi R8 LMS GT2, began its deliveries shortly before Christmas. The race car is assembled at Böllinger Höfe site – in the same factory as the road-approved models. It is built to compete in the new GT2 class and it also perfectly suited for track days. Starting in 2020, the new 640-hp Audi R8 LMS GT2 can be fielded in the GT2 Sports Club America, the GT2 Sports Club Europe and the GT2 Sports Club Asia.
After its reveal in November, the updated Audi R8 LMS GT4 for 2020 made its first public appearance at the Audi Sport customer racing Race Night in Neuburg, where Rahel Frey drove the car accompanied by fireworks.
