The Audi RS 3 LMS closed the 2018 season by becoming the “TCR Model of the Year” – adding another highlight to a record year for Audi Sport customer racing, on its tenth anniversary.

Never before has Audi Sport customer racing been as successful with its customers in international motorsport: On its tenth anniversary, the customer racing department reports 256 individual race victories (+63 % versus 2017), a total of 634 podiums (+46 %), 21 overall drivers’ titles (+40 %) and 38 additional class titles (+217 %). The Audi RS 3 LMS and Audi R8 LMS GT3 model ranges and the Audi R8 LMS GT4 that debuted in the customer’s hand collectively account for these successes.

“A big thank you and sincere congratulations to all our customers,” says Chris Reinke, Head of Audi Sport customer racing. “Right in time for our anniversary we’ve achieved our biggest annual tally of victories, trophies and championship classifications to date. This motivates us to give our best again in an even more fiercely competitive environment in the 2019 season.”
Another accolade was in store for the Audi RS 3 LMS: The TCR race car from the brand with the four rings was crowned as the “TCR Model of the Year”. The title, which is awarded by TCR organizers WSC (World Sporting Consulting), is based on points allocated according to results from all of the TCR-sanctioned racing series. “It’s a great honour for Audi Sport that the RS 3 LMS has won this prestigious worldwide classification out of the twelve manufacturers of TCR cars,” says Chris Reinke.

On track in December, the RS 3 LMS also collected the final trophies of 2018 during the last two weekends of the year. Just three days before Christmas in Brazil, the MC Tubarão team – together with Henry Visconde who won the title of his class in the 2018 Brazilian Endurance Championship – clinched a class victory in the “500 km de São Paulo”. In China, Audi Sport customers rounded off 2018 by taking home trophies at Guangdong: A third place for Champ X T.A. Motorsport in the TCR China season finale and a runner-up result for New Faster Racing in the Guangdong 12 Hours.
The Audi R8 LMS was a race winner in the FIA GT Nations Cup and scored podium results in the United Arab Emirates and East Asia. Belgian Audi Club Team WRT represented Belgium in a field consisting of 18 nations battling for the inaugural FIA GT Nations Cup in Bahrain, where the duo of Mike den Tandt and Charles Weerts clinched a race victory in an R8 LMS.

In the Gulf 12 Hours at the Yas Marina Circuit, the new evolution of the Audi R8 LMS took part in its first race outside of Germany and immediately clinched two overall podium results with Car Collection Motorsport and Attempto Racing finishing second and third respectively. The Tianshi Racing Team added to the success of the R8 LMS by finishing on the GT class podium in the Asian Le Mans Series’ four-hour race at Fuji in Japan.
The Audi R8 LMS GT4 clinched another endurance racing triumph and it was also successful in an international event for GT4 race cars. At the annual 25-hour race hosted at Thunderhill in California, the Flying Lizard Motorsports team won its class with an R8 LMS GT4 driven by an all-women driving crew. In Bahrain, Phoenix Racing continued its strong form in the GT4 category by finishing runner-up in the inaugural GT4 International Cup with the duo of Milan Dontje and Nicolaj Møller Madsen – the same driver pairing that won the 2018 GT4 European Series Silver Cup drivers’ title.
Audi Sport customer racing was well represented at the 2018 Essen Motor Show. With more than ten race cars on display at various locations throughout the grounds, fans enjoyed seeing the GT3 and GT4 versions of the Audi R8 LMS and the Audi RS 3 LMS. A highlight was the new evolution of the Audi R8 LMS that was on show at the booth of Audi Sport partner Eibach.
