DTM: Audi in the DTM with experienced teams

The entry of the six factory Audi RS 5 DTM cars in 2020 was tasked to the three Audi Sport Teams Abt Sportsline, Phoenix and Rosberg. Experience in abundance: ABT Sportsline celebrated its twenty-first DTM season with Audi, whilst both Phoenix and Rosberg have been with Audi in the series since 2006. The customer team WRT Team Audi Sport again competed in the DTM in 2020 after its debut season in 2019. Together, the Audi Sport teams ensured that all three of the DTM championship titles went to the brand with the four rings for the second year in a row. A triumphed farewell for Audi as a factory entrant in the DTM.

Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline

Thomas Biermaier

The family-owned ABT Sportsline company and Audi have been successful partners ever since their joint super touring car days in the late 90s. The outfit from Kempten was also the one that paved Audi’s way back into the DTM with the Abt-Audi TT-R that it fielded on its own at the beginning of the new millennium. In 2004, the squad became Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline. 2019 already marked the 20th season of Team Abt with Audi in the DTM and the 16th one as an Audi factory team. Five DTM drivers’ titles and five teams’ titles are on the Allgäu outfit’s tally. ABT and Audi Sport are also partners in the Formula E electric racing series.

Audi Sport Team Phoenix

Ernst Moser

Audi and Phoenix Racing have been partners in the DTM since 2006. Ernst Moser’s squad based in Meuspath near the Nürburgring has won the DTM drivers’ title twice and four times provided the best Audi driver in the overall classification to date. The two champions include Martin Tomczyk in 2011 and Mike Rockenfeller in 2013. Having been active in the DTM since the racing series’ comeback in 2000, the team is one of the most experienced squads in the field. In parallel to its DTM campaign, Phoenix Racing also competes in GT racing with the Audi R8 LMS.

Audi Sport Team Rosberg

Kimmo Liimatainen

Audi Sport Team Rosberg has been competing as an Audi factory team in the DTM since 2006. In total, the squad looks back on a more than 25-year history. The former Formula 1 World Champion Keke Rosberg formed Team Rosberg in 1994 and took the wheel himself in its first season. Subsequently, many prominent drivers have raced for Team Rosberg. This also includes the team founder’s son, Nico Rosberg, who took his initial steps in motorsport there as well. The 2016 Formula 1 World Champion has increased his involvement with the team that, together with René Rast, won the DTM drivers’ title and teams’ title in 2017 and 2019. Rast again won the drivers’ title in 2020. Kimmo Liimatainen is the new Managing Director and Team Principal of Audi Sport Team Rosberg since February 1, 2020. The Finn, who lives in Germany, replaced Arno Zensen, who was retiring after 25 years at the head of the successful racing team.

WRT Team Audi Sport

Vincent Vosse

Based in Baudour, Belgium, the W Racing Team (WRT) was founded in 2009 and has been successful from day one. The team has made a name for itself in international racing with numerous victories and championship titles racing with the Audi R8 LMS in GT3 competition. These include triumphs at the 24-hour races at the Nürburgring, Spa, Zolder and Dubai, the 12-hour races at Sepang and Bathurst, as well as several championship titles in the Blancpain GT series, among others with current Audi DTM drivers Robin Frijns, Nico Müller and René Rast. The team’s entry into the DTM fulfilled a long-time dream of team principal Vincent Vosse, which saw his Belgian team running near the front with strong performances in the qualifying sessions and races in 2019 and 2020.
