The six factory drivers of the Audi RS 5 DTM each share their greatest victory, their strongest motivation, their biggest hero, plus some very personal details.

Loïc Duval

Loïc Duval

Loïc Duval, Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish

My greatest race victory so far

That’s my 2013 Le Mans victory in the Audi R18 e-tron quattro. Let’s face it, Le Mans is the world’s biggest endurance race. On top of that, winning there as a Frenchman is really special.

Audi RS 5 DTM pit stop

My most important mental motor

It used to be just winning. Today’s it’s more than that. For me, it’s now mainly about achieving and celebrating successes together with my colleagues. It makes me experience all the awesome emotions that only team sport offers.

Bernhard Tapie

My biggest hero

I’m not very fond of the word hero. But Bernard Tapie is someone I’ve always found super-interesting and would like to have met. This man has had a life with such extreme highs and lows. Plus, he’s tried so many things. He was in motorsport, was a sports manager, a multiple entrepreneur, a politician and even an actor.

Loïc Duval and his family

The most important lesson my dog has taught me

Since the summer of 2019 my family and I have had an Australian Shepherd. Her name is Pepita. What fascinates me most about her is her loyalty to us, her new pack. Plus, anything she does is authentic and honest, like with all animals and unlike with us humans.

The animal I’d most like to be

A tiger. These huge wildcats look fantastic, have awesome strength, are very fast and very graceful.

Sunrise at Mount Fuji

My nicest souvenir from Japan

A picture showing my wife and me on the top of Mount Fuji at sunrise. The climb, the descent, and especially the view, will remain unforgettable for us. But our sweetest memory of Japan is our son Hugo, who was ‘created’ there during my time as a racing driver.

Robin Frijns

Robin Frijns

Robin Frijns on the podium

My greatest race victory so far

There’s not any win in particular. The 2012 season, when I won my first international title in the Formula Renault World Series, was especially important. My sweetest memory with Audi so far has been the 2018 Bathurst 12 Hour when I drove an Audi R8 LMS GT3. This track in Australia is extremely challenging. That’s why a victory there is very, very valuable.

Robin Frijns doing fitness

My most important mental motor

Always being in contention. It would be great if I could still continue racing for ten more years. But for that to be the case, I’ll have to remain fast and fit. After all, there are enough young top talents moving up.

Ayrton Senna in the cockpit

My biggest hero

That was Ayrton Senna. He was extremely impressive, not only as a racing driver but also as a person with character. Senna always spoke his mind, and he didn’t care about not necessarily making friends as a result.

Robin Frijns playing with his nephew

What my nephew Lucas prefers to play when I’m around

Anything to do with cars. Naturally, he loves toy cars, but even more so, he loves riding in the car with me. Before we start, he insists on sitting with me at the steering wheel and from my lap will try to reach anything that can be reached in the cockpit.

Brad Pitt

The part in a film I’d like to play

Characters like Robert ‘Rusty’ Ryan in the ‘Ocean’ films played by Brad Pitt. He played a lot of cool characters anyhow, whose way of acting I like.

Robin Frijns

My menu choice for guests

Well, I wouldn’t cook. I’d order a meal from a top restaurant of Italian cuisine, in other words pasta, pizza and antipasti. For dessert, I’d serve tiramisu, a variety of chocolate cakes and, of course, espresso macchiato.

Jamie Green

Jamie Green

Jamie Green on the podium

My greatest race victory so far

DTM, Norisring, 2012: that’s when I overtook the front runner on the last lap in the last turn and won. My sweetest memory with Audi is my pole position at the Lausitzring in 2015 when I was more than half a second faster than the second-placed driver.

Jamie Green with the team

My most important mental motor

Winning is what I enjoy most, but winning is not my most important motor, because in racing winning’s not just in my own hands. That’s why I continually focus on the preparation and further development of my racing car. I only have the chance to win if I manage to get this very complex process right as best I can and, above all, harmoniously with my team, with my mechanics.

Bradley Wiggins on the bike

My biggest hero

For me, former professional racing cyclist Bradley Wiggins is still an absolutely remarkable and inspiring personality. He was superior in both track and road events, a five-time Olympic gold medallist, a seven-time world champion and scored a victory in the Tour de France.

Jamie Green with a gun

My enjoyment of skeet shooting

Is centred on being together with my family and friends. My grandfather, my father and my uncles were skeet shooters, and I also enjoy it a lot, but success has never been my main motivation.

Jamie Green in football stadium

My favourite position as a football player

Right striker or right midfielder. I used to always enjoy attacking across the outside most. However, when I was a child, my favourite player was a specialist for the left, and he didn’t play for my favourite club, Leicester City, either: Ryan Giggs from Manchester United, who is now the manager of the Wales national team.

My secret love

For me, yoga is a totally relaxing enrichment and therefore part of my regular fitness programme.

Nico Müller

Nico Müller

Audi RS 5 DTM on the racetrack

My greatest race victory so far

That was the last round of the 2019 DTM season at Hockenheim. A lights-to-flag victory as clean as a whistle, in pouring rain and in the most challenging conditions, in the Audi RS 5 DTM with its brutal turbo power: that was just mega, especially after somewhat unluckily having lost my chance of winning the title at the Nürburgring two weeks earlier. On top of that, many of my Swiss compatriots were at the race track and enthusiastically celebrated me.

Nico Müller on water skis

My most important mental motor

Whatever I do I want to do perfectly. I constantly think about ways to improve. It’s always been that way.

Nico Müller with his parents

My biggest hero

Although he’s not in the public eye, my dad, Christian, has always been my biggest hero. The way he’s been juggling his job as the owner of a bicycle business and family life is incredibly impressive. Plus, how he helped me in every possible way to make my crazy dream of becoming a professional racer come true. I’ll be forever thankful to him for that.

Nico Müller on the bike

My weirdest moment on a bicycle

In the winter of 2008, on my way to school, I once crashed on ice and broke my left-hand little finger. Consequently, I had to postpone my first test in a single-seater racing car.

Nico Müller

My life with the smartphone

I inevitably spend a lot of time using it. It’s super-practical when you travel a lot, like I do. But my weekly statistics of how much time I spend with this thing keep shocking me. However, keeping a video diary for my fans on my smartphone and posting it on Facebook the way I’ve been doing for some time now is really good fun.

Nico Müller

My most vexing drill as a soldier

As a sports soldier in the Swiss Army my prominent fellow athletes and I are treated to a luxury programme. We don’t have to constantly train in deepest dirt and mud. However, in basic training, whenever we were whistled out of bed at two in the morning, had to pack our backpacks and assemble in the barracks yard for roll call was a truly annoying experience for me.

René Rast

René Rast

Audi R8 LMS ultra on the racetrack

My greatest race victory so far

The 24-hour race at Spa in an Audi R8 LMS ultra in 2014. I drove a large number of stints there and we started battling for the top spot only ten minutes before the chequered flag fell.

René Rast with trophy

My most important mental motor

Every morning I rise with the thought of becoming an even better racer in every respect and consistently working on that.

Michael Schumacher in the cockpit

My biggest hero

As a child, I adored Michael Schumacher. Today I’m no longer a fan and have no role models.

René Rast on the longboard

My way of relaxing on a longboard

Doing tricks on a skateboard like I used to, is too risky for me now, but I can superbly relax on a longboard. Just 20 minutes along the beautiful shore of Lake Constance at home in Bregenz are enough. That’s when I often think about my wonderful skateboarding days when I was young.

Instruments I’d like to be able to play

Knowing how to play percussions or a guitar would be cool, but I never had time to learn.

René Rast in the simulator

My penchant for driving simulators

Be it at Audi Sport, my Audi Sport Team Rosberg or at home, I immensely enjoy practicing in the driving simulator. As perfectly as these machines reproduce any driving condition of a racing car and all the details of a race track, there’s one thing they don’t give you: the absolute adrenaline rush. That’s because in a simulator the extreme pressure prevailing on a race track during a race weekend is missing. When you can’t afford to make even the slightest mistake in qualifying or at the start as a driver.

Mike Rockenfeller

Mike Rockenfeller

Mike Rockenfeller on the podium

My greatest race victory so far

When I won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in an Audi R15 TDI Plus in 2010 and, in doing so, made an absolute dream of mine come true. Even as a child, Le Mans was the ultimate for me in racing.

Mike Rockenfeller in the garage

My most important mental motor

Always making the right choices for my goals and leaving no stone unturned to achieve them.

Michael Schumacher on the podium

My biggest hero

Michael Schumacher and his way of being active in motorsport and representing it.

Mike Rockenfeller with his sons

The sweetest racing moments with my sons

It’s amazing to see Phil and Paul suddenly starting to imitate my team-mates Loïc Duval or Marcel Fässler, or playing pit stops and podium ceremonies, without any action on my part. Our youngest one was able to hum the German national anthem just by watching races on television even before he was able to speak.

Mike Rockenfeller

My dumbest sin in road traffic

Before the 2019 DTM weekend at Brands Hatch, we had a PR commitment in London. I was running late and still had to stop for fuel. Without pulling the parking brake or engaging a gear, I rushed inside the station to pay. And when I came back, I felt pretty embarrassed to see that my hired car had rolled into a row of oil drums.

Mike Rockenfeller

My favourite job outside motorsport

If I didn’t continue any involvement in racing after quitting my active career, I’d see myself as an entrepreneur. Developing a good idea for a business or product and successfully marketing it would be exactly my thing.
