Nine steps towards season six

130 days after season five ended in New York City, Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler is entering the 2019/2020 Formula E Championship on 22 and 23 November. The sixth season of the all-electric racing series kicks off with two races in Saudi Arabia. In the meantime, the team completed nine important stages with its new car, the Audi e-tron FE06.

SEPTEMBER 2019: A SPECTACULAR NEW DESIGN

For the new season, Audi has crafted a conspicuous exterior design of its two Audi e-tron FE06 Formula E racing cars: the front boasts plenty of visible carbon fibre, with accentuating lines in bright orange across the whole car. Previously, the road-going Audi e-tron had been presented with this aggressive look as well.

“I feel that this is the best-looking car we’ve had in Formula E so far,” says Daniel Abt in commenting about his new ‘company car’. His teammate, Lucas di Grassi, echoes Abt’s statement: “Every look in the five seasons had its unique character, but the FE06 is my favourite.” At the wheel of cars number 66 (Abt) and 11 (di Grassi), the proven pairing will be battling for new victories and titles. The German and the Brazilian have been racing for Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler ever since Formula E’s inaugural season and, with a tally of 40 podium finishes and more than 1,000 points, are the most successful driver crew in the series.

According to the regulations, Formula E continues to permit just very limited technical innovations. In the development of the new Audi e-tron FE06, Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler has focused on optimising every single detail of the preceding Audi e-tron Audi e-tron FE05: even higher efficiency than before, lower weight, optimised arrangement and accessibility of the powertrain components, plus enhanced software operability.

SEPTEMBER 2019: TEST IN MAJORCA

Before Formula E’s first joint pre-season tests in October, Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler exclusively tests the new Audi e-tron FE06 on the circuit in Majorca. The test is focused on the MGU04 motor-generator unit. Audi has jointly developed it with technology partner Schaeffler. Daniel Abt and Lucas di Grassi take turns at the wheel of the test car.

SEPTEMBER 2019: PRESENTATION AT THE IAA

High above the trade fair stand, at a 90-degree angle on a red wall: in this spectacular style, Audi unveils its conspicuously designed new Formula E racing car to the world at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt/Germany.

The Audi e-tron FE06 is a key element in Audi’s Roadmap E. Premium manufacturer Audi is in a process of consistently transforming itself into a provider of electric mobility and continues to demonstrate its technological expertise in competition on the race track. By 2015, Audi is planning the market launch of more than 30 electrified models.

SEPTEMBER 2019: FIRST CONTACT WITH FANS

A festival focused on electric mobility is the perfect place for the first laps of the Audi e-tron FE06 in front of a crowd. A few donuts for good measure: with them, Daniel Abt leaves distinctive tyre marks on the tarmac and lasting impressions with visitors during the Krone E-Mobility Play Days in Spielberg.

Everything at the event held at the Grand Prix circuit in Austria revolves around electric mobility. During the demo laps, Audi also showcases its first ever electric production model, the Audi e-tron. Another highlight is the Audi e-tron Vision GT in whose passenger seat some of the fans get to experience the electric driving feel in a particularly impressive way.

OCTOBER 2019: ROLLOUT IN NEUBURG

Before the two Audi e-tron FE06 cars earmarked for racing start chasing times at Valencia, they travel their first few metres on Audi’s in-house test track in Neuburg an der Donau. Prior to this rollout, the electric racing cars were prepared there at the Competence Centre Motorsport by Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler’s mechanics.

OCTOBER 2019: PROMOTIONAL APPEARANCE IN ITALY

Lucas di Grassi’s first public appearance in his new FE06 takes place at the Festival Dello Sport in Trento. In the town in Northern Italy, exceptional athletes and legendary teams are celebrated by a large number of enthusiastic fans. The 2016/2017 Formula E Champion thrills them with demo laps and donuts too and, in doing so, successfully promotes Formula E’s European kick-off in Rome on 4 April.

OCTOBER 2019: TEST AT VALENCIA

At Valencia, the two Audi e-tron FE06 have their first meeting with their 22 competitors. During Formula E’s official pre-season tests in Spain, Daniel Abt and Lucas di Grassi jointly test with the other teams and drivers for the first and only time before the season opens.

The driver pairing’s schedule at Valencia is not just dedicated to driving. Abt and di Grassi are summoned to appear on camera for official photos and videos because all drivers of the Formula E Championship will be featured in various ways on posters, in social media channels and during TV broadcasts throughout the coming season.

OCTOBER 2019: TRAVELLING ON TO KEMPTEN

In the sixth Formula E season, preparation and fielding of the two Audi e-tron FE06 are again in the proven hands of the ABT squad in Kempten/Germany. In the final stage, the racing cars are prepared for the season opener in the garages of Audi’s long-standing partner.

NOVEMBER 2019: SHIPPING TO THE SEASON OPENER

About two weeks before the first race, ten containers and boxes embark on their journey to Saudi Arabia from ABT’s home base in Kempten. The total cargo amounts to ten tonnes, consisting of two complete Audi e-tron FE06, spare parts and equipment. Logistics specialists DHL handle the haul to Stuttgart airport and on to Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh and then finally the suburb of Diriyah.
