GT3: Sports car factory for racing and the road
Born on the track. Built for the road: Audi Sport carries the genes from motorsport to the road, and no other model embodies this idea as consistently as the Audi R8. The Audi R8 V10 plus is the strongest and fastest production Audi ever. Its development was characterised by a close cooperation between racing engineers, racers and engineers from the Technical Development Department. The production model and racing car share a common basis.

The close connection between the two models starts with the design and ends with the production. The Audi R8 is produced in a production site specifically built for the sports car – the Böllinger Höfe in Heilbronn. In 2011, Audi acquired a 23-hectare site in the industrial park in Heilbronn and opened its logistics centre and the R8 production facility there in 2014.

Although the mix of materials in the racing car is more complex, Audi has integrated manufacture of production and racing cars even more closely with the second generation of the R8. In the Böllinger Höfe production facility, Audi Sport GmbH manufactures the chassis of both variants together. Though the racing car receives, for example, adapted aluminium cast nodes and a steel roll cage. For the assembly of such motorsport components, the racing chassis is removed from the production line and then reintroduced again. Nevertheless, the racing chassis of the R8 LMS remains integrated into basic production process up to the construction of the roof and the cathodic dip coating (KTL), which is a kind of primer. Then the racing cars are completed in Heilbronn-Biberach.
