GOOD PERFORMANCE IN RACE ONE

From the second spot on the grid, Niels Langeveld delivered an excellent first race. As early as on lap one, the Dutchman in an Audi RS 3 LMS briefly took the lead before making a small mistake that put him back in second place, which he went on to keep up until the finish. For Audi Sport, this marked the seventh WTCR podium this season and 24th in total. Frédéric Vervisch, Langeveld’s Belgian team-mate in Comtoyou Team Audi Sport, was initially trailing him in the third spot before a foreign object between the brake calliper and the front wheel destroyed a rim. Jean-Karl Vernay achieved sixth position for Leopard Racing Team Audi Sport. The early stage saw a wild card driver, Ritomo Miyata of Audi Team Hitotsuyama, in seventh place up until a defect occurred.

DIFFICULT BEGINNING

On a drying track, all Audi drivers were struggling in the second qualifying session, resulting in unfavourable grid positions for races two and three. When the chequered flag fell, Jean-Karl Vernay, following two strong battles, was the best Audi Sport driver. He made up four positions in each race and finished in ninth and tenth. Frédéric Vervisch, from 18th on the grid, improved in both races by five positions. After the end of the third race, he moved up by two more spots to eleventh place after some rivals were handed penalties. Ryuichiro Tomita from Audi Team Hitotsuyama on clinching 17th position in race two marked the best result of the total of three wild card entrants in the field of 29 drivers. Following the Suzuka weekend, the ninth of ten events this season is coming up in Macau in three weeks from now.
