3 Questions for Stefan
What is your current project/area of responsibility?
I am currently the project manager responsible for all customer functions relating to driver assistance systems (DAS) and highly automated driving (HAD) for the future electronics architecture. I am also responsible for the DAS/HAD system in those vehicle projects.
Could you briefly describe the increased impact of IT in the car?
The Audi of the future will be unmistakable, fully networked, electrified, and automated. Digitization and artificial intelligence are very much driven by data. In fully automated driving, the car is “always on.” It becomes a mobile terminal device that constantly generates, processes, and learns from data. Transferring and processing data play an essential role in this regard. For example, together with VW software subsidiary CARIAD, we are developing a Group-wide operating system and a highly secure and permanently available automotive cloud. To master the complex challenges of the future, networked thinking is essential to our work.
Is there a project you are particularly proud of?
In the past, I was responsible for the emergency braking functions, the so-called Audi pre sense 360° – a system that detects the risk of collisions around the car and initiates targeted safety measures. I remember it vividly. Back then, we were constantly driving through major Italian cities to check the robustness of the functions. In addition to radars and cameras, we also developed a new type of laser scanner for the current Audi A8 that significantly improves the field of view compared to the Audi pre sense front. I put a lot of effort into this system – and when the laser scanner went into production, it was a huge success for me.
