Functional Project Manager for MQB + MEB

Tiantian Pan, Project Manager for Functional Development/Application for ADAS Driver Assistance Systems

What is your project/area of responsibility and what does a typical working day look like for your team?

I am in charge of functional projects for driver assistance systems and automated driving with a focus on customer functions. That means I define the brand-specific functional requirements and details for the functional specifications, while taking non-functional requirements such as laws and regulations into account. I am also responsible for practical approval and clearance for customer functions in the entire vehicle. Just yesterday I came back from road test in Turin, where we tried out the environment model for a successor model to a small SUV. The environment model visualizes the combined (object) perception of radar and camera and shows the driver the vehicle’s surroundings. This increases customer confidence in automated driving functions. When I’m not at the vehicle, I spend a lot of time at my desk doing various tasks, like coordinating with specialist departments, holding concept meetings, and scheduling and resource planning.

To what extent does your division offer opportunities to work abroad and to get to know new fields?

That happens in a variety of ways. From the outset, my aim was to combine professional demands with personal interests. That was also why I shifted my job from China to Germany. Audi offered me this opportunity and is known around the world as an employer that promotes inter-cultural work and diverse development opportunities. In the future, I could also imagine working in Japan or the United States, perhaps for two or three years.
Audi offers many opportunities for personal and professional development all over the world. Each location presents different challenges. In the process, you constantly learn new things and grow both professionally and personally.

What does someone need to bring to work in your area?

An interest in the complete overview is important. On the one hand, you need to understand the chain of complex functions connected throughout the car. On the other hand, you need to have an overview of all the parts and modules relevant to your ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) functions in the overall system. Generally speaking, you should be able to talk openly about uncertainties and problems and tackle solutions together. Colleagues should trust each other, provide information, and cultivate a culture of appreciation.
