Audi continues clear course towards e-mobility

High demand for electric vehicles, start of construction on the new production plant for fully electric Audi models in China and exceeded CO₂ fleet goals: Audi is continuing to systematically carry out its ambitious electric roadmap, and it’s setting a strong pace on its path to the sustainable premium mobility of the future.

Electromobility at Audi: More than just an electric drive

Audi's approach to electromobility is about much more than just an electric drive. Rather, all e-tron models focus on people and their needs. Audi describes product highlights with clear customer value as “electrifying” – for instance, optimal charging times, long ranges and the ability to stream one’s favorite music. Interior and spatial concepts’ designs will be based entirely on passengers’ well-being in the future, as Audi’s latest concept cars show.

CO₂ target values considerably exceeded

But recent figures show that the implementation of the electric roadmap is progressing as well. For instance, the fleet’s average CO₂ value last year is a good indicator of successful electrification. Audi significantly exceeded its 2021 CO₂ fleet targets for the European Union, Norway and Iceland. With 122 g/km, the company significantly undercut the legally stipulated target value of 129 g/km.

Increased deliveries of electric models

One reason for these strong figures is the distinct increase in deliveries of fully electric models. The Audi e-tron (including the Sportback) was the bestselling fully electric premium SUV in Europe in 2021. With the new Audi e-tron GT quattro, Audi RS e-tron GT, Audi Q4 e-tron and Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron models, Audi more than doubled its product portfolio of fully electric models in 2021.

Only fully electric models starting in 2026

Audi’s plan is to have more than 20 fully electric models in its portfolio by 2025. By as early as 2026, the only new models the brand with the four rings releases on the market will be fully electric. The company has made a clear commitment to electromobility in terms of investment planning as well. For instance, in the years 2022 to 2026, Audi intends to invest around 18 billion euros in electrification and hybridization, based on its planning round adopted at the end of 2021. With overall investments of around 37 billion euros, nearly half of the outlays will go to these future-oriented topics.

Start of construction on cutting-edge plant for fully electric Audi models

A key component of Audi’s electrification strategy is its new factory in China. By the end of 2024, a cutting-edge plant for fully electric Audi models will be built on a surface area of around 150 hectares in Changchun. Its imminent start of construction is another milestone. “The Audi FAW NEV Company plays a key role in our electrification strategy,” said Markus Duesmann, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG.

“Charging has to be as easy as refueling”

The strategy also includes investments in a premium charging infrastructure. “Charging has to be as easy as refueling – and ideally even more convenient,” Duesmann said. The first Audi charging hub, which was built at the exhibition center in Nuremberg at the end of 2021, demonstrates the charging experience of the future today. Electric car owners can reserve one of six high-powered charging spots with up to 320 kW of charging output there. While their cars are charging, customers can make use of the connected lounge to take a break or work on the go. In the future, the Audi charging hub will be able to serve peak demand for charging in an urban environment. Audi will be testing out another charging hub in Zurich, Switzerland, starting this summer.

Whether it’s Zurich, Nuremberg or Changchun, with its new campaign, Audi is taking the “electric” feeling out into the world and once more making it clear that the Group associates electromobility with much more than just an electric drive.
