Sustainability – consistently practiced

Sustainability is no longer just something that is nice to have; instead it serves as a prerequisite for Audi’s actions. Six important questions about the details and background of the company’s sustainbility roadmap.

1. What are the challenges?

Scarcity of resources, environmental pollution and climate change are among the major challenges of our time. Audi is consistently meeting these challenges.

Mobility is one of society’s primary necessities. Whether in urban or rural settings, regional or international – people are looking for adequate solutions to get from A to B. Audi responds to this desire with its products. As part of the Volkswagen Group, the brand focuses on individual premium mobility. Audi is well aware that there are sizable questions to address.

2. What role does sustainability play?

Sustainability is no longer just something that is nice to have; instead, it serves as a prerequisite for Audi’s actions. Audi is driving its transformation from a car manufacturer to a mobility service provider by acting purposefully and with all its power.

We want to unleash the beauty of sustainable mobility for our customers and, in addition, act consistently in a sustainable way along the value chain.

This is why sustainability has moved to the core of our corporate activity. Activity that  always focuses on the overall picture. Sustainability has been a central corporate goal and an absolute necessity for ensuring future success. For Audi it means future viability and it represents a fundamental basis for acceptance and relevance – thanks to sustainable products from a sustainable company.

To highlight our determination with respect to this focus, Audi developed a vision in 2019: “Unleash the beauty of sustainable mobility.” To make sure that this vision can be transformed into reality, the company set out a new mission for itself, which was then presented in the form of a new corporate strategy: consistently Audi. The goal of the strategy is to position the company for the future, to play an instrumental role in shaping the transformation as we head into a new age of mobility and to be a pioneer of carbon-neutral mobility in the premium segment.

3. To which questions does the company seek answers? What are the focal points?

How sustainable can individual mobility be? Is electric mobility the only sensible approach to sustainable transportation? The automotive industry is experiencing radical upheaval. For Audi, this means working steadily on developing solutions to the questions raised above.

The Sustainability Roadmap has three focal points: Climate, Health, Resources. To build a sustainable future, the company is working together with its partners to preserve natural resources, avoid environmental pollution and assume social responsibility. In this way, the company is making a targeted contribution to solving global challenges.

When it comes to health, the brand is focusing on reducing pollutant emissions such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter and the topic of noise.

In terms of climate, Audi combines all activities in the Sustainability Roadmap that are intended to reduce the CO₂ emissions of vehicles and CO₂ volumes generated during production.

Resource conservation includes activities related to the circular economy to change resource consumption in the vehicles themselves and during manufacturing sustainably.

These focal points give rise to specific action areas, focal points for development, measures and key figures, which constitute the core of Audi’s sustainability activities.

4. Audi is planning its commitment for the long term. What are the general parameters?

Audi is committed to the two-degree goal and is contributing to its realization. The two-degree goal describes the objective of international climate policy to limit the global temperature rise by 2100 to less than two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. This goal, which has been discussed for more than 30 years, eventually became legally binding for the first time as the Paris Agreement, which has been in force since November 2016 and was signed by 196 contractual parties. Actively contributing to the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) is also part of the rigorous focus of the Volkswagen Group.

5. What is Audi’s commitment?

Audi uses a wide variety of instruments (impact mechanisms) in many fields. This is particularly evident in the way the company seeks to achieve social impact. Here, the Group not only supports isolated environmental projects, but has also placed its sustainable actions on a broad strategic footing. And in addition to ecological and economic aspects, social sustainability is also of great importance.

In order to make a significant contribution to society through its commitment, Audi is guided by three principles: Educate, Engage and Empower.

Engage includes volunteer work and donations. Educate combines all training and education programs that Audi offers or supports. Empower is the third strong tool because Audi acts as a multiplier here. Through various innovation and cooperation projects, the company empowers other players to shape the world more sustainably overall.

6. What are the special challenges for Audi as a manufacturer?

When it comes to sustainability in the automotive industry as a manufacturing business, one special feature is the complexity of the value chain. The product is not the only thing that has to have sustainable characteristics – production is affected as well. This goes hand in hand with Audi’s commitment to implement sustainability equally in all divisions.

Audi is keeping its promise to “unleash the beauty of sustainable mobility” on several levels. Sustainable mobility means specifically: Audi wants to be completely net carbon-neutral throughout the entire company by no later than 2050. Electric mobility is the key element of a more sustainable and more climate-friendly traffic system.

“Beauty” means specifically: Audi wants to be the most progressive premium brand with the best customer experience. Audi wants to be the brand with the greatest appeal, fascinating customer-relevant innovations and breathtaking design.
