“I’m waiting at a red light in the city center, check the arrival time for my next appointment in the digital cockpit, and then I remember that I forgot about the heating when I left home this morning. It’s still running on high.” It’s a scenario that most of us have experienced at one point or another. In the analog world, it might have meant canceling the appointment and turning around to go home. However, not in the fully networked Audi A1 citycarver. All it takes is a quick voice command and the heating back at home is turned to low. But how does that actually work?

Hocus pocus or vision of the future? – No, it’s a digitalized car
The magic word is “connectivity”. The Audi is connected to the smartphone and connected to the driver’s home via Amazon Alexa. Nick Sohnemann explains which advantages a connected car has to offer. He is the founder and CEO of Future Candy, a startup that analyzes trends and innovations. Nick also knows exactly which technologies are popular and helpful. “It’s already possible to download movies while you’re on the road or adjust home appliances from inside the car by connecting cars to homes,” he explains. He finds connected vehicles in the big city an even more exciting prospect. “Smart route planning that takes my appointment calendar and traffic flow into account, or automatically paying for parking garages from inside the car will be our reality in the future,” says Nick. But what role do people play in all of this?

In the thick of things instead of out on the street: the compact city car adjusts to the flow of traffic and gets the driver to his destination on the quickest route possible.
The smart city car for digital natives
For Audi and Future Candy, the users’ problems in daily life — both small and large — are of central importance. What’s the fastest way to get from A to B? And how can people take care of small tasks from inside the car without needing to make an extra stop? To offer tailor-made solutions in the digital world, companies need to understand their customers precisely. That’s something that Tobias Junglas, project manager for the development of the Audi A1, knows: “Our customers’ smartphone usage has totally changed. They don’t use their smartphone and car separately from one another; they use them together. That’s why we developed the networked citycarver, a unique smart Audi, for our young, technophile, design-loving customers,” he explains.

A connected car that makes life easier
Mariella Drmac, project manager for electronics for the Audi A1, describes how exactly the compact, smart Audi looks: “We incorporated a few technical features into the A1 citycarver that are normally only included in luxury-class vehicles. They make the citycarver the perfect urban car for young people.”
If the driver has booked a connectivity package, the driver’s smartphone connects directly to the A1 citycarver using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. To the former it can even connect without a cable. “For me, the highlights are the on-street parking app that suggests parking spaces in the area, and the additional LTE antenna that is built into the rear spoiler. That gives me better reception in the car, meaning I’m even better connected to the world,” says Mariella.
For customers who use Amazon Alexa, the citycarver can even connect to the driver’s home, if desired. “With the home-connect system, I can use voice commands to adjust my home appliances, such as the heating system, from within my car,” explains Mariella with a wink.

On the road at home in the citycarver
The heater is perfectly adjusted, the appointment is taken care of — now it’s time for an evening off. With its smart route planning, the driver of the Audi A1 citycarver easily finds his way home and finds a parking spot right around the corner after only two tries — thanks to on-street parking. At home, the apartment is waiting for him at the perfect temperature — not the sauna he would otherwise have come home to. The Audi A1 citycarver can be put to a lot of good uses — as a companion in the urban jungle, as a solitary oasis, and as a connection to the world. But one thing is for sure: the city car is always fully connected to its driver’s life – including the heater at home.
