Electric Escape: Through the Carpathians in the Audi e-tron GT
An asphalt ribbon winding its way through the wild Carpathian Mountains, past dense forests, rugged rock formations and spectacular viewpoints. Romania’s Transfăgărășan is widely regarded as one of Europe’s most fascinating driving roads. At an altitude of more than 2,000 meters, the route reaches its dramatic climax before descending back into the valley through a spectacular series of hairpin bends. Yet this road is far more than a destination for driving enthusiasts. It offers insight into a wide variety of landscapes and driving environments – making it the perfect stage for a journey with the Audi e-tron GT family.
Electric freedom on one of Europe’s most spectacular roads
The first rays of sunlight sweep across the hills surrounding Sibiu as the vehicles stand ready outside the hotel: the entire model family – from the Audi e-tron GT quattro and the S e-tron GT to the flagship RS e-tron GT performance.
Even before the journey begins, the electric Gran Turismo demonstrates one of its key strengths. While enjoying the first coffee of the day, the cars are connected to a high-power charging station. With charging power of up to 320 kW, sufficient energy for the next stages of the journey flows into our travelling companion within a short period of time. Thanks to its high charging performance and access to the Audi charging network, charging becomes a natural and largely unobtrusive part of trip planning. The extensive European charging network with its large number of charging points makes finding a suitable charging location both simple and time-efficient.
During the first kilometers on the A1 motorway leaving the university city of Sibiu, the dynamic vehicle reveals its character as a Gran Turismo. Mile after mile, it glides across the roads of Transylvania with remarkable composure. The body appears almost connected to the road itself, while the carefully optimized aerodynamics contribute to an exceptionally serene and relaxed driving experience.
As the motorway falls behind, the character of the route begins to change. The road follows the contours of the landscape, sweeping bends replace long straights, and the active suspension system hints at its capabilities for the first time on the journey. As we approach the Transfăgărășan, the road narrows and disappears beneath a canopy of green leaves. Finished in Morning Dew Green metallic, the vehicle almost merges with its surroundings. The quiet hum of the electric drivetrain reinforces this impression. Instead of engine noise, the gentle flow of air, the forest and the landscape dominate the senses.
The mountain challenges – the e-tron GT responds
With the first significant gain in elevation, the true drama of the route begins to unfold. The corners become tighter and the gradients steeper. Now the active suspension system moves fully into the spotlight. Operating with remarkable precision, it combines agility with the stability that defines a true Gran Turismo. The experience is further enhanced by all-wheel steering, which makes even narrow sections feel effortless while simultaneously providing additional stability.
The steeper the climb becomes, the more impressively the vehicle reveals its potential. Here, the fascination of electric performance is experienced in its purest form. Up to 680 kW (925 PS) are available. Even more impressive than the power itself, however, is the way it is delivered. Maximum torque is available virtually instantaneously. No delay, no waiting – just immediate propulsion. The mountain is not conquered by the Audi e-tron GT; it is overcome with an almost playful ease.
The Transfăgărășan is widely regarded as one of Europe’s most spectacular driving roads for good reason. Stretching over 150 kilometers, it features gradients of up to nine percent. Hairpin bends, rapid changes of direction and constantly changing surface conditions follow one another in quick succession. This is where the precision of the electric quattro drive system becomes evident. Within milliseconds, drive torque is distributed between the front and rear axles. Exiting tight corners, the RS e-tron GT accelerates with impressive control and accuracy.
With every meter gained in altitude, the scenery becomes more breathtaking. The forest opens up, the landscape broadens and the light becomes clearer. Eventually, Lake Bâlea is reached at an altitude of 2,034 meters. Before us lies an alpine landscape of rock, water and sky. Remarkably, no charging stop is required. The remaining range is more than sufficient. At the same time, we already know that the descent ahead will return fresh energy to the battery.
Energy in motion
Between the mountain peaks begins perhaps the most impressive section of the famous Carpathian pass road. Hairpin after hairpin traces the mountainside, creating a graphic ribbon of asphalt cascading towards the valley below.
While many vehicles simply dissipate braking energy on descents like these, the e-tron GT recovers a significant portion of it. With recuperation outputs of up to 400 kW, deceleration is converted into electrical energy. The descent becomes a demonstration of intelligent efficiency.
Energy does not simply disappear – it returns.
For an electric Gran Turismo with exceptional dynamic capabilities, this section becomes the moment of truth. Every movement of the body remains predictable and controlled. Working discreetly in the background, the wheel-selective active suspension system counteracts roll, pitch and vertical body movements while controlling each wheel individually in the vertical plane. As a result, the succession of tight hairpins becomes a showcase for composed driving dynamics. The vehicle remains precisely on line, actively compensates for uneven road surfaces and combines sporting agility with remarkable calmness. This is exactly where the strength of the e-tron GT lies: it does not need to dramatize its performance – it makes performance controllable.
After the exposed hairpin sections, the route returns once again to the shelter of the forest. An intimate moment, steady in pace and calming in perception.
A road tells its story
The next destination is an unusual stop. Against the backdrop of the Transfăgărășan Tree House, a striking contrast emerges: high technology meets wilderness, precision meets raw nature. Yet the Carpathian Mountains are far more than the setting for a spectacular driving road. They are home to brown bears and serve as a reminder that this landscape commands respect.
The e-tron GT feels equally at home in this environment. The road widens, and the valley opens up. Here, a different form of performance takes center stage: effortless progress rather than maximum attack. The seats contribute significantly to this experience, their carefully balanced combination of support and freedom of movement making even long distances feel remarkably effortless.
Lake Vidraru is a fitting companion on the journey with the e-tron GT. With a storage capacity of 320 million cubic meters, the dam generates around 400 GWh of electricity each year. This corresponds to the annual energy demand of more than 100,000 households. A natural reservoir of elevation, power and energy.
Just a few kilometers from the hydroelectric power station, the culture of Wallachia comes to the fore. Myth and modernity, past and present meet along one of Europe’s most fascinating roads. Passing Bran Castle, perhaps the place most closely associated with the legend of Count Dracula, it is not Dracula who becomes the focus of the experience. Instead, it is the moment of travelling through a landscape in which nature, culture and storytelling intertwine.
Returning to everyday life with a new perspective
The closer the route comes to Pitești, the more urban and orderly the surroundings become. The wildness of the Carpathians is gradually left behind by the e-tron GT family. On the new section of the A1 motorway, performance alone is no longer decisive – aerodynamic efficiency takes center stage.
Aerodynamics are not defined by a single component but by the interaction of the bodywork, air suspension, active cooling-air management, underbody aerodynamics, diffuser and rear spoiler. It is particularly on the motorway that this interplay becomes tangible.
In Pitești, the Romanian Grand Tour comes to an end. Every stage of the journey in the Audi e-tron GT family revealed its own distinct character. The question was never how far an electric vehicle can travel. Rather, our journey on the Transfăgărășan provided an answer to how intensely distance can be experienced today – quietly, swiftly, confidently and with the feeling that technology does not separate us from the journey, but instead brings us closer to the landscape, the road and the moment itself.
