Many typical Audi innovations first saw the light of day at the company’s second German plant. The assembly lines in Neckarsulm currently produce the A4, A5, A6, A7 and A8 model series. Audi Sport GmbH, which is also based here, produces the Audi R8 and the brand’s sporty RS models. The Audi Forum Neckarsulm offers its visitors a fascinating automotive experience.
Car manufacturing in the region at the confluence of the Neckar and Sulm rivers dates back more than a century. The company that prompted the emergence of this industry was NSU. Starting out as the knitting machinery manufacturer Neckarsulmer Strickmaschinenfabrik, it merged with Auto Union GmbH in 1969. Audi NSU AUTO UNION AG changed its name to AUDI AG in 1985 and transferred its registered office to Ingolstadt.
This includes Audi Sport GmbH, fuel-cell technology, the lightweight construction center, the development of gasoline and diesel engines, motorsport engines and special engines, as well as the development of car interiors. Audi has established lightweight construction as key element of modern automotive engineering. With the Audi A8* in 1994, the company launched the first car in the world produced in a large series with a monocoque aluminum body. Since then, Audi has continually expanded its expertise and eventually even succeeded in reversing the weight spiral.
Numerous high-tech methods have been added. These innovative technologies are implemented at strategically important suppliers, which in turn supply Audi and other brands of the Volkswagen Group. In the field of lightweight construction, the engineers focus not only on the materials, but on the entire production chain – with innovative solutions for process technology, bonding technologies, quality assurance and service and repair possibilities.
The development of various engines is an important cornerstone of the Neckarsulm site. In addition to V diesel and V gasoline engines for the larger models, the engines for motorsport applications are also developed here.
Neckarsulm is one of the sites with the biggest product diversity of all the Group’s plants. The manufacturing equipment includes a new press shop, an aluminum-steel body shop, two pure-aluminum body shops, a paint shop and several assembly lines. In Toolmaking, a new tryout press went into operation in 2015, which is the most modern and biggest drawing press in Europe.
Since 1983, Audi Sport GmbH based in Neckarsulm has stood for high performance and high technology. In addition to developing and constructing the RS and R8 models, the Audi subsidiary is responsible for automobile individualization and accessories as well as customer motorsport. In the year 2015, the new generation of the high-performance sports car was launched. No other series-production car with the Four Rings is more powerful, faster or more distinctive: The new Audi R8 high performance sports car is designed for maximum dynamism in all areas of technology – from the Audi Space Frame (ASF) to its aerodynamics to the further developed quattro all-wheel drive.
Since 1995, the Neckarsulm site has regularly been certified in accordance with the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) of the European Union, and it was once again certified in 2015. A key factor for certification is that evidence is provided of compliance with applicable law and of continual improvements in environmental protection. The Audi site in Neckarsulm therefore searches for new solutions in many areas, for example to reduce energy consumption, CO2, dust and solvent emissions, and to increase waste recycling while minimizing total waste. By 2020, the site’s CO2 emissions are to be reduced by 40 percent compared with 2010. An important step in this direction is that 40 percent of the electrical energy used in 2014 was regenerative.
The Audi Forum Neckarsulm looks back on a successful year 2016: With more than 230,000 guests during the year, the number of visitors since it was opened in 2005 climbed to more than 2.4 million. The history of the Neckarsulm site can be experienced at the Audi Forum. It is the place where up to 150 customers pick up their new Audi each day. The Audi Exclusive Studio offers a wide range of inspiring possibilities for automobile customization and individualization. The brand and experience world offers a diverse framework for readings, concerts, meetings and conferences – from classical to pop, from business to pleasure. In 2016, 13 cultural events were held at the Audi Forum. A visit also has a lot to offer on the culinary side: The Nuvolari restaurant is available for relaxed enjoyment.
The Audi Neckarsulm site is one of the most attractive employers in Baden-Württemberg and the largest employer in the burgeoning Heilbronn-Franconia economic region. The town, which takes its name from the Neckar and Sulm rivers, has a population of around 26,600 and provides over 35,900 jobs.
Forward-looking company: AUDI AG also brings a large number of apprenticeships into the region. Audi employed a total workforce of 16,703 at the Neckarsulm plant as at 31 December 2016.
