Making history in the desert

Audi RS Q e-tron

Audi won the legendary Dakar Rally with the Audi RS Q e-tron¹ in January 2024, successfully making motorsport history and bringing the marathon rally programme of Team Audi Sport to a close. At the Dakar Rally, Audi faced one of the greatest challenges in its motorsport history. The Audi RS Q e-tron¹ made its debut in 2022 and was the first car developed for the T1U class of the Dakar Rally regulations for alternative drivetrains². The continuous development and hard work by Team Audi Sport culminated in the Dakar victory for Carlos Sainz and Lucas Cruz two years later, marking the first triumph for a car with this kind of drivetrain² in the legendary event.

Dream team: Line-up of three strong driver crews

Team Audi Sport’s Dakar programme included a dream team of illustrious driver crews. Spaniards Carlos Sainz, former 2-time World Rally champion, and Lucas Cruz won the 2024 Dakar Rally – their fourth triumph as a driver crew with four different manufacturers. From France came absolute Dakar royalty with Stéphane Peterhansel and Edouard Boulanger. “Mr. Dakar” Peterhansel is a 14-time winner of the legendary event. The French duo won the 2022 Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, the first victory for the Audi RS Q e-tron¹ in a desert rally. Rounding off the line-up was long-time Audi factory driver Mattias Ekström, who was joined by former rally driver Emil Bergkvist. As the youngsters in the team, they had a steep learning curve, which they mastered admirably by always being on the pace and also taking four Dakar stage wins from 2022 to 2024.

Trusting in experience: Team Audi Sport

The brand with the four rings took part in the Dakar Rally with Team Audi Sport, which consisted of two main pillars: Audi Sport in Neuburg and Q Motorsport GmbH in Trebur. In Q Motorsport, Audi Sport added a very experienced partner to its Dakar programme. Q Motorsport GmbH was founded by Sven Quandt and his two sons Thomas and Tobias Quandt. As a driver, Sven Quandt won the T1 Marathon Cup in 1998. In the same year, his team GECO Raid celebrated a 1-2-3 victory in the T1 classification of the Paris–Dakar Rally. From November 2002 to the end of 2004, Quandt was the head of motorsport at Mitsubishi Motors. At the same time, he began to build up the X-raid Team, which has celebrated six victories in the Dakar Rally and also won the FIA World Cup for cross-country rallies eleven times.

Audi and the Dakar Rally

An adventure for Audi: After many international successes in a wide range of categories, the brand with the four rings returned to rallying in 2022 – a form of competition that marked the beginning of the brand’s successful history in motorsport. From 1981, the Audi quattro revolutionized rallying, and in 2024, Audi made motorsport history again with victory in the Dakar Rally.
